Ten years have passed since the release of the previous game in the Diablo series and fans are already tired of waiting, but the fourth part has finally come out.
The game impresses with its scenario, abundance of game content, interesting battles and character development. Once, together with the angel Inarius, they created the human world, which was supposed to become a safe haven for them, far from the war between Heaven and Hell. But as we know from past games in the series, Sanctuary did not escape the bloody fate, and people were involved in a divine conflict. Lilith is of course unhappy with this, as is the mysterious person responsible for her return. Their goal is to give people weapons that can repel the attacks of the Underworld and provide them with immunity. In other words, the antagonists seek to break the vicious circle.
The motives, at first glance, are noble, but the catch is that Lilith is a demon. It poisons people’s minds, tells them what they want to hear. This, by the way, is one of the leitmotifs of the local narrative – motivation by hatred. We play as a wanderer who, by chance, fell into the clutches of the villagers poisoned by the influence of Lilith. Our goal in the future is to stop the demon at any cost. We will be assisted by a small group of different Haradrims – the keepers of knowledge.
The first three acts, in addition to the pursuit of Lilith, will be dedicated to the representatives of the fading order and, in combination, to our companions. Lorat is a pragmatic, wise old man who is the leader of the group and its mentor. He looks very brave and cruel. Donan, unlike his friend, has long retired, but is forced to return due to the circumstances. And finally, young Neirella, in fact, is not a Haradrim at all, but she really wants to become one, to follow in her mother’s footsteps.
Along the way, we will meet other characters. One of them will be a knight who wants to atone for a sin that entailed grave consequences. We will also see the leader of the Cathedral of Light, unquestioningly believing in the predicted victory of Inarius. We even meet Inarius, who seeks to kill Lilith at all costs and regain his place in heaven. And finally, we will meet a mysterious woman who became a victim of a ritual and a vessel for a powerful demon.
The narrative of Diablo IV turned out to be rich in bright personalities and events. It is accompanied by cutscenes, including cinematics (at the beginning of the game and at the end), an abundance of dialogues, a small number of dramatic story arcs and, most importantly, an epic finale, where all the main melodies are played like clockwork: the dramatic actions of the characters, the insurmountable obstacles and disclosure of topics. It was hard to tear myself away from the last act, which in itself is a sign of quality.
The brutal design of the plot gives it a special urgency. There was a lot of talk about returning Diablo to its roots after a bright third part, but in the novelty with hardcore content they even went too far. In the game, throats are cut, limbs are cut off, dipped in seas of blood, and they are not shy about killing. And occultism, as a visual motif of the series, is already noticeable here at the stage of character creation, when you study the assortment of tattoos.
The setting for a game of this genre is generally unprecedented. If the rest of the industry is already used to adding cinematic scenes to their stories, then aRPG trends come late. Diablo IV breaks with established traditions and gives the player a complete solo adventure experience, recreated using real cutscenes. Some of them take place in isometry, but even then the developers do not hesitate to provide the characters with unique animations, actions within the scene. Others are played in third person and look like what we’re used to seeing in expensive action RPGs.
Diablo IV helps the player to immerse themselves in its world not only with quality directorial work, but also in other ways. For example, characters often have optional lines explaining the details of certain events, and the script itself – not only of the story campaign, but also of side quests – focuses on the fate of people and how they deform under the influence of aggressive circumstances. The story of the dual nature of man is shown very well. Mother is a demon of Hatred, father is a fallen angel, hence all the difficulties. The motive is interesting, this is rare. The endless struggle between good and evil is part of human nature, and therefore it is not so easy to break the vicious circle. Even the actions of the angelic being, Inarius, openly show his vain and selfish nature.
The game has an excellent script, which was certainly hard to expect from Blizzard. There is a slight risk of getting lost in the story – there is a lot of information and characters – and therefore we advise you to ignore additional activities at first and read through all the optional lines in order to fully immerse yourself in the story.
